Hi I’m Gaby, glad to see you here.Who am I? I’m Gaby Ricketts – writer, single mum, vegetarian, photographer, sweet tooth, libran, sci-fi nerd, technology geek and honouree member of Gryffindor.

Ever heard of the ‘gift of the Gab’? Yep that’s me. I love to talk ☺

Born in Melbourne, I grew up in Tasmania before finding love and moving to Newcastle and then Brisbane. I have 2 girls now in their late teens who are nearly ready to leave the comfortable nest I made them. As they stretch their wings and get ready to fly, it occurred to me that my life was about to change and I needed to change along with it.

When I was 36 I suffered an obstetric fistula and other birth complications when I had my youngest daughter. The effects were catastrophic in every possible way. My life, as I knew it, was over and I had to learn to live with a chronic health condition for the rest of my life. It was bloody hard.

When the girls were 3 & 6 I started university studies, something I had always wanted to do. I separated from their dad fairly soon thereafter and graduated with a journalism degree in 2010. It took me 8 years but I got there. A year after graduating it occurred to me that I could put my journalism degree to good use and help other women like me, so I set up a website, became a fistula expert and started advocating for them.

Then BAM! my eldest daughter was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes just before she turned 11. It was a shitty time, no doubt about it, and there was simply no time for anything else in my life.

Fast forward to now… my youngest is about to finish school, get her P’s and quite frankly I’m sick of hearing both of them telling me to ‘get a life’.

So that’s precisely what I will do, 50 in the city was created for women like me who are empty nesters and empty nesters in training. A place to come and discuss how to ‘get a life’.

Join me as I step tentatively in the big unknown and traverse the road sans kids! It’s guaranteed to be fun and I can’t wait. I have some big things planned and I would love you to be a part of it.
