Recently my daughter and I went to Melbourne for a 3-day sojourn. I was born in Melbourne and love any opportunity to visit but my daughter had never been there. With her TAFE Patisserie studies about to finish, I thought a visit to Melbourne and its many patisseries and delicatessens was in order.
But where to stay?
Initially I looked on Trip Advisor and Bookings.com and read the reviews. For this visit I decided to stay in the CBD.
“I only hope we don’t lose sight of one thing – that it was all started by a mouse.”
I first visited Disneyland after the obligatory teenage Contiki tour when I was in my early 20s. As with many memories when you get to my age, I often wished I could go back again and truly appreciate the experience (and take bloody great photos because,
When booking our trip to the USA I decided to break up the long flight to LA by flying via Honolulu. So we stopped over in Honolulu for one night on the way to LA and again on the way back to Brisbane.
I have visited Honolulu twice before, the last visit approximately 8 years ago, so I was keen to show Olivia some of my favourite places, even if it was just for a short visit.
“Los Angeles is just New York lying down.” (Quentin Crisp, Writer)
After our visit to Disneyland, Olivia and I headed to LA, roughly 60 mins drive from Anaheim.
Los Angeles in Spanish translates to ‘The Angels’ and is therefore nicknamed ‘The City of Angels’. It is huge, even bigger than what it looks like on a map. Situated in Southern California, LA is surrounded on three sides by mountains.
There was much excitement in our Muggle house when we realised Universal Studios in Hollywood was opening a Harry Potter attraction just before we were due to visit in November.
We visited Universal Studios as part of their VIP Experience. You can read about our day here. Unfortunately I fell ill at the tail end of our VIP day so I didn’t get to fully experience Harry Potter as that was the last stop on the tour,

Recently my daughter and I spent the day as VIPs at Universal Studios in Hollywood.
When I read online that it was impossible to see the entire park including the new Wizarding World of Harry Potter in one day, I decided to investigate the ticket pricing further. Unfortunately we really only had one day available to see the park and I wanted to maximise our time there without killing our sanity and our feet in the process.
I am now residing in Brisbane, but I left Hobart, Tasmania when I followed my heart in my mid 20s, first to Newcastle NSW before finally settling in Brisvegas. Marriage and babies followed, I got busy with family responsibilities but going back to Tassie again just never eventuated. See my post on ‘Why going back is good.’ which explains some of the other reasons I didn’t go back.
In 2014 a combination of younger daughter going on a ski-trip and an excess of Qantas frequent flyer points meant that older daughter and I had a week to spend together.

Visiting NYC (or NOO YAWK as the locals call it) had been my dream for a long time. When I started university my girls were aged 3 & 6. When I finished they were 11 and 15. Yep it took me 8 years because I worked full time and studied ‘in my spare time’.
I decided to take the girls to NYC as a graduation present for myself,
